Chromebook setup freezes at "Determining Device Configuration"

Just a quick note about this setup problem that a few new Chromebook users have encountered. During the initial setup phase, the message "Determining Device Configuration" appears and the setup process stalls.

Apparently, one person waited four hours in this state. I guess I don't have that kind of patience. I simply shut down the computer (after about 15 mins), restarted it a few seconds later and the setup process completely immediately. If this doesn't work for you, you can search for info about hard reseting your Chromebook.

Thanks for posting this. I was doing a search for this exact phrase as I'm trying to enroll almost 40 Chromebooks for my organization, and the thought of waiting hours for all these devices just made me want to cry!

The shut-down/restart worked perfectly. Thanks again!

No trouble Anon, glad it helped. I figured other people would be searching for the phrase and I didn't find an answer when I searched.

Thanks for posting this! I had the same problem with a new Toshiba Chromebook 2 and this helped me solve it quickly.

How long should the "Determining Device Configuration " message appear in normal setup?

I've only run the setup once, so I can't say for sure. However, in my investigation I found people talking about the process and there can be an update as part of that step. However, I got the impression that it should only take a few minutes.

This step should take less than a minute.

Thanks so much for posting this. I also had this problem today with a new Toshiba Chromebook 2. It was stuck for about ten minutes before I took your advice and did the hard restart, and it started right up with no delay.

This helped me too. After waiting 10 to 15 min with a hung computer I searched online and landed here. I shut of the Toshiba chromebook 2, waited 20 sec and restarted. My brand new machine worked flawlessly. Thanks so much!

Thanks Stephen. I waited on my new Dell Chromebook as long as Dennis Miller's O'Reilly Factor bit lasted and then I found your blog article at the top of my Google search. Patience is not one of my virtues and your helpful article was spot on!

Thank you so much for posting this. My new Chromebook did exactly that and I didn't know what to de, whether to wait or switch it off. I switched it off and back on again and bingo! All sorted!

Thank you guys. I have been waiting for about a half hour in the froze state and finally researched and found ur blog.. sooo helpful. Just shut it off.. I am giving it about 10 minutes before turning back on. I'm nervous...

This happened when I was trying to start up my new HP Chromebook. Don't know what I would have done if I hadn't found this as not very computer savvy. Thank you very very much, you've saved hours of waiting (and frustration!).

I've had few issues. The one issue I've had with my Toshina is that it tells me I've unsafely ejected my SD card every reboot. Minor problem

My shut down is locked too. How do you unfreeze that? Yikes!

Neumann said...

I'm not able to shut down either...it is locked and I don't know how to unlock. Do you know how to shut down with the keyboard alone?

Neumann said...

Oh, it worked now! Hopefully it will work when I turn it on now.

Neumann said...

Yep. Shutting down and restarting unfroze the configuration. Thank you for your posting!
